  • The Giants have woken up and kicked the last two goals of the first half to trim the deficit to one point.

Hogan becomes the visitors’ first multiple goalkicker in the process.

A reminder that the Giants have to beat the Blues to guarantee themselves a spot in the finals. If they lose, they will miss out if Essendon and Fremantle both win tomorrow.

The pendulum is starting to swing the Giants’ way as they now lead the clearances 20-19, tackles 33-22, inside 50s 28-24, contested possessions 68-67 and hitouts 22-21.

In the space of 10 minutes, Geelong has shown why they’re one of the most devastating teams in the competition, piling on five goals to open up a 39-point buffer at the break.

It was Selwood and Dangerfield who lifted the Cats onto their shoulders, while the Dees simply couldn’t get their hands onto the footy.

They’ve had their fair share of inside-50s, the Dees, but need to be more efficient going forward and their forwards need to hold onto their marks and take their opportunities.

Looking forward to a big second half from Petracca and Pickett, who are capable of bringing their side back into the contest.

An astonishing second quarter ends with Melbourne’s minor premiership hopes in turmoil.

The Cats finish the first half with the last eight goals against the best defence in the competition, which is just extraordinary when you think about it.

It was such a tight game for over a quarter, and then all of a sudden the Cats flicked the switch in a devastating 10-minute period which saw them dominate the centre bounces.

    Geelong 2.1, 10.2 (62)
    Melbourne 2.3, 3.5 (23)

    GOALS
Geelong: Hawkins 3, Cameron 2, Dahlhaus, Selwood, Dangerfield, Close, Rohan
    Melbourne: Pickett, B.Brown, Viney

    DISPOSALS
    Geelong: Henderson 17, Menegola 16, Dangerfield 15, C.Guthrie 15, Selwood 15
    Melbourne: Oliver 19, Harmes 16, Salem 15

    INTERCEPTS
    Geelong: Henry 5, Atkins 4, Henderson 4, Menegola 4
    Melbourne: Lever 5, Bowey 4, Brayshaw 4

All of a sudden the Cats are out to a 28-point lead with 5:07 left in the first half on the back of six unanswered goals, 8.2.50 to 3.4.22.

Hawkins boots another one, to take his tally to three, before Dangerfield runs to 50m out and unleashes a long bomb, and then Close also gets in on the action.

Melbourne’s vaunted defence is struggling with the Cats’ tactic of running at them with effective use of handballs.

And the Blues are not giving up the ascendancy to the Giants, they now lead by 11 points early in the second quarter thanks to goals from Ed Curnow and Casboult, who’s also playing his final game.

Hogan got one back for the Giants, but they’re down 2.5.17 to 4.4.28. They’re playing a very dangerous game with their finals spot not cemented yet.

Curnow now has a game-high two goals, which is his first multiple bag since early 2019.

Hawkins makes it three goals in a row for the Cats after outmarking Lever and May, before converting a beautiful snap set shot from the boundary line.

He’s now the game’s first multiple goalkicker, having booted the last two majors, and the Cats are out to a nine-point lead with 7:49 left in the first half, 5.1.31 to 3.4.22.

It’s a pretty decent advantage given the tight and tense nature of this affair so far.

Viney extended the Demons’ lead early in the second quarter with a gorgeous checkside punt, but back-to-back goals from Geelong twin towers Cameron and Hawkins have put the Cats back in front by three points, 4.1.25 to 3.4.22.

It looked as though the narrative gods who specialise in footy fairytale endings were working overtime into Saturday night through the first quarter of the Carlton v Giants game, with the unheralded Blues getting off to a flying start against a Giants team which needs to win to ensure a finals berth.

Eddie Betts, playing in his 350th and last ever game, had a hand in the opening goal which put the Blues in front midway through the quarter after an arm wrestle in the first 10 minutes.

Then youngster Corey Durdin doubled the advantage with the first goal of his AFL career as the Blues, all aggression and enthusiasm, set the tone. The Giants woke from their slumber late, but they didn’t get their first goal until the last minute of the term when Daniel Lloyd shot truly.

A very good start from the Blues, but they’ll know that a good quarter or two won’t be enough, especially after what happened to them against Port Adelaide last week.

The Giants had better get their act together because they will miss the finals if they lose and then Essendon and Fremantle win tomorrow.

Carlton are on top in clearances 11-7, contested possessions 43-35, free kicks 6-3 and scoring shots 6-4, while the Giants have the lead in disposals 109-107, tackles 18-10, marks 32-20 and hitouts 12-10.

The Demons make a promising start to their clash of the heavyweights with Geelong down at Kardinia Park.

Simon Goodwin’s side take a two-point lead at quarter-time, and they’ve done it largely thanks to their clearance domination (14-6), while they also lead the disposals 93-91, tackles 15-12, marks 25-23, inside 50s 12-10, contested possessions 36-33, free kicks 7-6, scoring shots 5-3 and hitouts 11-9.
